Hair Loss on GLP-1 Medications

Noticing more hair in the shower drain a few months into a GLP-1? You’re not imagining it, and you’re not alone. Hair shedding is a known, usually temporary effect of losing weight quickly. Here’s what’s behind it and what you can do.

How common is it?

Hair loss appears as a side effect in the prescribing information for both major weight-management GLP-1s. In Wegovy’s adult trials, it was reported by 3% of people on semaglutide versus 1% on placebo (Wegovy PI); it is also listed for Zepbound (Zepbound PI). Reports tend to be more frequent with larger, faster weight loss.

Why it happens

The most likely explanation is telogen effluvium — a temporary shift of hair follicles into their resting phase after a physical stressor such as rapid weight loss, a big drop in calories, or low protein intake. Shedding typically shows up two to four months after the trigger, which is why it often seems to appear “out of nowhere” well into treatment. It’s diffuse thinning, not bald patches.

Does it grow back?

With telogen effluvium, hair usually regrows once the trigger settles, though it can take several months to look normal again. If you notice patchy loss, scalp symptoms, or shedding that continues well beyond six months, see your doctor or a dermatologist — other causes, such as thyroid problems or iron deficiency, are worth ruling out.

What may help

  • Prioritize protein at every meal. Our protein calculator gives you a daily target to discuss with your care team.
  • Don’t under-eat. Reduced appetite can push calories very low; the calorie calculator helps you sanity-check intake.
  • Ask about labs such as iron, vitamin D and thyroid before buying supplements.
  • Be gentle with your hair — tight styles and heat can make shedding look worse.
